Dishwashers always seem to break at the worst time. It is when you are expecting a lot of people to come for dinner or when you simply don’t have time to deal with it. You certainly don’t have time to go and shop for a Dishwasher!!!
Recently I had to purchase dishwashers and was delighted to see some new features. But when you are desperate there is never enough time to really get into the newest and greatest features.
What do we expect dishwashers to provide?
Here is my list of must haves:
1. cleans the dishes ( I am sure everyone agrees with this!)
2. can be really loaded up
3. doesn’t take forever to go through a regular cycle
4. has a quick wash cycle
5. has to be super quiet
6. outside finish co-ordinates or matches other large appliances
These all sound logical, right??
So this is a good starting point for Tips.
TIP # 1
Determine what features are most important to you and prioritize them.
If your dishwasher backs onto the baby’s room then ” really quiet” will be super important.
TIP # 2
Make sure your plates and/or flatware fits.
One of my daughters has a large flatware set ( from Pottery Barn) and they didn’t really fit correctly in the dishwasher. Flatware size gets tricky on the top shelves. The top shelves are wonderful but again you have to watch the size of your flatware and make sure it fits.
TIP # 3
Size is not as big deal with a dishwasher because they are normally one traditional size.
But, if you are purchasing product made off shore then you should check it fits in your existing cavity.
TIP # 4
Determine the loading factors.
Most dishwashers have a shelf that can be altered up and down. This feature is super important when you load big oversized pots and long stem glassware. The aim is to get everything possible in so you don’t hand wash anything. Plus, easy to get out after they are washed.
TIP # 5
Getting the best price is of course one of the most important parts of buying a large appliance.
I went in depth about large appliance retail pricing on a post for buying fridges. You can refer to that for more information. However, the most important thing to know is most retailers follow the big appliance honour system. Basically they will match any price from another retailer. Shopping on line for large appliances is easy but you need to know the features.
So, those are my top 5 tips but I should also add you should ensure the dishwasher is installed properly. Not just the plumbing part, but also that it stays in the cavity. Yes, ours was not done properly and when the dishwasher is really loaded and bottom heavy the shelf can slide right off to Neverland. It sounds like a very robust Greek wedding. So, far only one chipped plate. Maybe in 2018 I will have time to deal with it!!
I intentionally did not add a lot of images so it will be super easy to just print off the post for reference. However, I found in my research that there were not very many dishwasher pictures showing the top utensils shelf that is readily available. So below is a shot so you can see what I was talking about saying the utensils might not fit properly.
